George J. Verville died August 5, 2014 , he was 93 years old. He was born May 4, 1921 to Ruby and Armand Verville in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
He graduated from Cornell High School as valedictorian of his class. He earned a B.S., M.S. and PH.D in geology at the University of Wisconsin.
He married Elinor Trout, December 4, 1943 in Madison, WIS. They had three children: Ann, Tom and Barbara.
A member of the National Guard and R.O.T.C he joined the U.S. Army in 1943, became a 2nd lieutenant in the infantry and after attending mule pack school, a member of the 1st Calvary Division, serving in the Philippines and Japan. A member of the Army Reserve, he retired with the rank of Captain.
In 1951 he started working for Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. (later Amoco Production Co.) in Tulsa, as a research geologist and supervisor. He also worked at the Casper, Wyoming and Denver, Colorado Divisions. He specialized in the biostratigraphy of fusulinids and authored many scientific papers.
He was a member of six geological societies and served as treasurer of the Paleontological Society.
He liked to hunt and fish and was a avid golfer. For ten years he managed twice-weekly Senior Scramble Golf Tournaments at Mohawk Gold Course and Sapulpa Golf Course.
He was preceded in death by his parents: his daughter Ann, brother, Arthur Verville and half-brother, Howard Lee.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Randy Thrower, Kiefer, Ok., son and daughter-in-law Dr. Thomas and Susan Verville, Charlotte, NC., half-brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Tom and Felicia Lee, Charlotte, NC, grandson, Dr. Timothy Verville and wife Yelli, Tempe, AZ, two granddaughter, Sarah Thrower and Karen Walker and husband Stephen, Tulsa, OK. and three great-grandchildren.
A Memorial service will be held 10:00 AM Sat. August 9, 2014 at Fellowship Congregational Church, 2900 S. Harvard Ave.
