Goldie L. Johnson, 93, of Broken Arrow, OK, left this world and entered her eternal destiny on Saturday, November 22,2014. Her daughter Ardith and Matt, one of her beloved nurses at Montereau, were at her side when she peacefully went to be with Jesus, her Lord and Savior.
Goldie Lavada (Waters) Johnson was born in Porum, OK, on December 28, 1920. She was the youngest of 11 children born to Perry W. Waters and Mary Jane (Cox) Waters. Goldie's parents were sharecroppers in Eastern Oklahoma during the Depression. All of Goldie's siblings shared in providing for the family by picking cotton for 50 cents a day. They moved from one cotton farm to another in Texana, Eufaula, Checotah, Porum area sharing a two room home.
In 1940 she married Gordon F. Meyer, a carpenter, and moved to Muskogee. They had three children Ardith, Susan, and Gary. Together Goldie and Gordon built or bought and remodeled several homes in Muskogee. Gprdon enclosed part of a garage so that Goldie could fulfill her lifetime desire to be a beautician. On the window was painted Goldie's Beauty Shop.
Time flies and things change, In 1964 Goldie married Hughie L. Johnson, a car salesman with City Chevrolet in Muskogee. Goldie closed up her Beauty Shop and moved from the west side to the east side. Having a desire to be among the ladies of the city, she went back to work in more than one clothing store in Muskogee. Her employer Carol Lee's honored her with "Goldie Johnson Day" placing an announcement in the newspaper, She and Hughie enjoyed many years together until his death in 1997.
Goldie was preceded in death by her husband Hughie and her son Gary F. Meyer. She is survived by her daughter Ardith (Meyer) Helmer and husband Don Helmer, Sr., of Broken Arrow, and daughter Susan (Meyer) Stanford and husband Mike Stanford of Tulsa; 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service was held earlier in the week at Memorial Park Cemetery in Muskogee. A Memorial Service will be held at Evergreen Baptist Church in Bixby on Saturday, November 29 at 10am.
