Gwen Elizabeth Charles, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, died Monday, November 15th at the age of 82 years.
Gwen Elizabeth Charles was born November 11th, 1939, in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Leslie and Ilene Morue Mauney. She grew up in Tulsa attending Tulsa Public Schools. Upon graduation from Will Rogers High School, she furthered her education at Oklahoma State University. Gwen married John Bailey Charles Jr., and while they took separate paths in life, their marriage was blessed with one son, John Bailey Charles III. They remained close celebrating holidays and time with their son and his family.
Gwen later met the love of her life, fiance Bill Pigman, with whom she enjoyed many years of traveling and attending sporting events prior to his death. Gwen worked as a legal secretary before finding her calling as the secretary for The University of Tulsa Athletic Department, specifically the Golden Hurricane Football Team from which she retired. She enjoyed working with many football coaches and players throughout her career. Gwen was an avid sports fan, particularly of baseball and football. She also loved animals of all kinds with riding horses being a specific favorite. Throughout the years she utilized her knitting skills to make friends and family hats, blankets, and so much more. Gwen enjoyed spending time with her son, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. She also maintained contact with lifelong friends from Will Rogers High School.
She is survived by her son, John Bailey Charles III and wife Kristi of Tulsa; three grandchildren: William Charles and wife Bailey of Skiatook, Elizabeth Charles of Tulsa, and Katherine Charles of Tulsa; and one great-granddaughter, Sawyer Charles of Skiatook. She also leaves behind niece, Christney Stephensen, and nephews Alan Mauney, Mel Bohnefeld, and Will Bohnefeld.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Ilene Mauney; a sister, Becky Bohnefeld; a brother, Morris Mauney; and fiance' Bill Pigman.
Services are scheduled for 1:00 pm, on Thursday, November 18th at Moore's Memory Chapel, 1403 S. Peoria Avenue, Tulsa, OK. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
