Harold Stewart Johnston, a pioneering figure in the engineering world and a devoted family man, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 5th, 2023, at the age of 91. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on June 11th, 1931, Harold, lovingly known as Hal by his friends and family, made a lasting impact in the lives of those who knew him, both personally and professionally.
Hal was among the first graduating class of Ryerson Technical Institute in Toronto, Canada, where he earned an esteemed degree in Electrical Engineering. This accomplishment would serve as a testament to his determined and innovative spirit, which only grew stronger from that moment in his life. As an engineering writer, Hal captured the intricate language of electrical systems, becoming an authority in his field. He was responsible for writing comprehensive and informative manuals for major companies, including the renowned General Electric (GE), where his work was recognized and respected throughout the industry.
In May 1958, Hal married his beloved wife, Ruth Helen Johnston, and they embarked on a journey of love and partnership that spanned many years. The couple relocated to the United States shortly after their marriage, where they began their lives anew and set the foundation for their growing family. Hal and Ruth welcomed their first child in 1963, a daughter named Kathy, during their time in Syracuse, New York. Not long after, Hal's career achievements took the family to Massachusetts, where they welcomed in their second child, David, whom they adopted in 1969. Through moves, career advancement, and raising a family, Hal and Ruth's love flourished, providing an extraordinary example of dedication and nurturing care for their children. With a growing family and a keen sense of duty, Harold once again embraced change when his work called for a move further west to Oklahoma in 1970. It was there that the Johnston family planted their roots, remaining in the Sooner State for 46 years.
Hal was also an active member of the Harbour Patrol, where he took great pride in contributing to the safe operations of his local harbor. He was remembered fondly for his sense of humor, resilient character, and his unwavering support of those around him. Hal also had the privilege to be on a semi-pro baseball league in Toronto as a pitcher on the Kitchener baseball team. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury to his arm, and his baseball career was cut short.
He is predeceased by his devoted wife, Ruth, to whom he was married for almost six decades. Hal is survived by his loving children, Kathy and David, as well as his cherished daughter-in-law, Lisa. His memory will also be perpetuated by his grandchildren, Jeremy, Addison, and Christopher, who will forever carry on his legacy of love, strength, and passion for learning. Though he ventured far from his birthplace, Harold never lost touch with his Canadian roots. He is survived by his cousin Sharon West Ivlavsky and cousin James Murray, both of Barrie, Ontario, Canada, as well as his niece Linda Lamb of Monterrey, CA. The family that Harold leaves behind will undoubtedly continue to cherish the memories and laughter they shared, all the while knowing that the love he held for them remains unwavering.
With his passing, the world loses a man driven by curiosity, bound by love, and held in the highest esteem by those fortunate enough to know or work with him. Harold Stewart Johnston, a brilliant engineer, tender husband, and steadfast father -- he will be deeply missed. In May of 2016, he faced the loss of his beloved wife. With her passing, Harold decided to relocate to Florida to live with his son David, his daughter-in-law Lisa, and their family.
As we reflect on Harold Stewart Johnston's life, let us remember the joy and warmth he brought into the lives of those he encountered. His love for big band music brought melody to the hearts of all who knew him, just as Red Skelton's comedy brought laughter to his lips. And as each golf swing arcs gracefully through the air, we are reminded of the perseverance, strength, and love that Harold embodied throughout his 91 years on this earth.
A celebration of Harold's life will be held at noon on Friday, March 24th, 2023 at Memorial Cemetery, 5111 South Memorial Drive, Tulsa, Oklahoma for those wanting to pay their respects to Harold's life.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in Harold's name to the American Cancer Society or Lion's Club International eyeglass program. He was an active member of his church and the local Lion's Club.
