Obituary

Wilmer Harold Smith, 96, a resident of Tulsa for some 80 years, died Thursday, May 12, 2016, at 6:30a.m. at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Tulsa. Funeral services will be held at 2:00p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, at Memorial Park Chapel, with Pastor Steve Lewis of Parkview Baptist Church officiating. Family prayers and interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery by Moore Funeral Homes Southlawn.

A native of Welch, OK, Smith was born on August 18, 1919. He was one of five children born to Luther Smith and the former Allie V. Duncan, a member of the Cherokee Nation. His mother was a descendant of Cherokees who had been forced to move to Oklahoma from their tribal lands in the Southeast United States by federal troops during the Trail of Tears in the winter of 1838-39.

Smith received his education in the Chetopa, KS public schools, graduating from Chetopa High School. He and the former Lloyda Kathleen Byrd were married in 1941. In 1942, Mr. Smith enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. He served in the 51st Air Service Squadron, seeing action in Europe and North Africa during WWII. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 13, 1945, after attaining the rank of Sergeant, and received a Bronze Service Star. Following his discharge, the Smiths made their home in Tulsa where he was employed in the automobile industry. His wife Lloyda Kathleen died in 1984. He married Mildred James Staggs in 1986. He retired from Ernie Miller Pontiac in 1987. Mildred Staggs Smith died in 1994. In 1997, he met and married Frankie Griffith who survives him.

Mr. Smith was a 32nd Degree Master Mason, a member of Akdar Lodge No. 555. He was an avid fisherman and a member of Good Sams RV Club. He was an accomplished automobile and airplane mechanic, as well as being a skilled gardener. Smith was a talented folk artist, focusing on wood carving, especially noted for his WWII era planes.

Survivors include wife Frankie Griffith Smith of Colonial Manor, son David Ralph Smith and wife Nancy, of Owasso, two grandsons, one step-granddaughter and one great-grandson.

Smith was preceded in death by wife Lloyda Kathleen Byrd, wife Mildred James Staggs, his parents, brothers Wayne, Wilbur and Eugene, and sister Goldie.
