Obituary

Hazel Marie Johnson Hutson, born July 24, 1931, died July 29, 2015. She is survived by nieces, Marcus Wood Deming "Little Billy" and Rose Kelly; nephews Sam and Bruce Wood, David and Bill Johnson, Jr., all of Tulsa; great-nieces and nephews; great-great-nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Sam Hutson; parents, Marcus Hubert and Rose Lee Johnson; two sisters, Velma Bergman and Alice Lorraine Wood Clement; and two brothers, Gus and Bill Johnson.

Hazel met Sam at Hillcrest Baptist Church on April 4, 1948, and it was love at first sight. They married August 18,1950 after she graduated from Central High's "Nifty Fifty" class. She attended Lowell from kindergarten through ninth grade. At Lowell, she played trumpet in the school band. Her father was a great musician and encouraged each child to play a musical instrument; some played more than one. Hazel worked as supervisor for retail merchants for 20 years and retired from Tulsa Public Schools as coordinator of payroll/personnel with 23 years of service. Upon her retirement, Sam asked what she wanted for her retirement and she immediately said, "A piano." She learned to play late in life, but she enjoyed it to no end.

Hazel loved the outdoors, liked to water ski, "couldn't swim a stroke," fish, and mow the lawn. She and Sam took time to travel and to enjoy life together for 52 1/2 years. The Hutson home as well as their cabin on Lake Hudson was always open to neighborhood children, nieces and nephews going to the lake with them. They taught them to ski, fish and hunt.

She will be remembered by all who knew her for her homemade brownies, biscuits and cocoa gravy, the many different cakes she made, and don't forget the homemade chili and deviled eggs. Hazel was baptized at Sheridan Road Baptist Church by the Rev. J. Frank Davis.
