Obituary

Helen Johnson passed from the life into eternal rest on April 3, 2026 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She was born to David Brown Davis and Elizabeth (Goudeau) Davis Chamberlain on January 6, 1937, in Pierce, Oklahoma. Helen attended Dunbar Elementary, Sadler Jr. High and graduated from the historical Manual Training High School.

Helen often spoke of her childhood, spending time with her grandmother, Mary Deere and Grandfather, Mitch Goudeau, Sr. She had fond memories of being on Papa Mitch's farm with his flourishing garden, pecan and fruit trees and the delicious meals.

As the elder of her siblings, Helen was a helper to her mother and siblings. She began working at an early age and was the first salesclerk of color for JC Penny in Muskogee. She later went to work for Southwestern Bell (later AT&T) as a Telephone Operator. She retired from AT&T with over twenty-five years of faithful service.

Helen also loved & respected her stepfather, Robert Chamberlain. He became a very important part of her life and was a wonderful grandfather to her children & father-in-law to Thomas.

Helen met the love of her life in Jr. High but was always shy around him. Thomas came into Mack's Grill one evening for a burger and struck up a conversation with the lovely lady behind the counter. She always said he was the one! After seven months of courtship, they married May 2, 1957. Through thick and thin they stayed committed to their family. Thomas passed December 24, 2022, after sixty-seven years of marriage.

Helen was baptized at an early age in Muskogee. She was faithful to the congregations she attended, including the Second Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Baptist Church. Before her husband, Thomas', health began to decline they were faithful not only in their service, but in the tithes and offering. Helen loved to serve and loved the Lord.

Helen was proceeded in death by her loving husband, Thomas; her parents, David B. Davis and Elizabeth Davis Chamberlain; her step-father, Robert Charles Chamberlain; her children, Dr. Robert C. Johnson and Deborah Elaine(Johnson) Evans; granddaughter, Shanna Elaine Simmons and siblings, Robert Davis, Susie Morris, Tiny Teague, Evelyn Avery, Dee Hampton Davis, Millicent Charles, Marion Pat Chamberlain, Tommy Don Chamberlain, Robert C. Chamberlain, Clotiel Coursey, Wynona Pearl Hutchinson & Pat Taylor.

The family would like to thank The Springs Nursing Facility & Good Shepherd Hospice. A very special thanks to granddaughters Nia & Jazman' (Jasmine) for their weekend visits, trips to the hair & nail salon and facials to keep Helen beautiful. They also took her to check on her home and for trips around Muskogee. They were with their grandmother to the end. Your unwavering devotion and support made her last days so comforting. Spending time with you was very special. We would also like to give very special thanks to her sister (BFF), Stella, nephew, Byron and great-great niece Amari for their loving care. They would stay with Helen and give her constant attention, love and laughter. Thank you my baby sister for the bond we had. Also thank you to nieces, Latressa and Michelle. Your visits, gifts and delicious food were something she looked forward to. Your Mothers (Evelyn & Tiny) would be proud of the beautiful women you have become.

To my daughters, Bernadine and Tommye...I am deeply grateful to the love & care you showed me. You both sacrificed so much to make sure I had everything I needed! Even living out of state, you made sure that I made all my doctors' appointments and made sure all my needs were met. You are my earth angels.
