HELEN LOIS SCHUMACHER POST
Helen Post went to be with the Lord on September 27th, 2022, less than two weeks after her 97th birthday. She was born on September 14th, 1925, in Paterson, NJ, to parents John and Louise Schumacher. Her parents were the caretakers of the Gaede Estate in Preakness, NJ. She spent her childhood years there living in the country, until after the Great Depression when the family moved to Paterson, NJ, and opened a flower shop.
She was married to the late Rev. Bob Post for 61 years. They were wed on March 9th, 1948, at Hawthorne Gospel Church in Hawthorne, NJ. In 1949, Bob took a position as Minister of Music at the Second Baptist Church in Lancaster, South Carolina. It was there that they had their two children, Robert Samuel and Ruth Louise. She is survived by Robert and his wife Dynda, granddaughters Lacy and Susannah Post, Ruth and her husband Bruce Munns, granddaughter Sally and her husband Chad Schapmire, and great granddaughter Sadie Schapmire.
Helen blessed many people through her and Bob's ministry over the years. After South Carolina, the family moved to the First Baptist Church in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where they led four services every Sunday, one of which was broadcast on television. In 1956 they moved to Birmingham, Alabama, to Central Park Baptist Church where they remained briefly, until Bob took a job in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at Glenwood Baptist, as Pastor and Minister of Music. Helen played piano and organ for the church, as well as taught Sunday School. They stayed at Glenwood until 1977, and remained in Oklahoma after.
A gifted musician, she played the trombone and cello in band as a teenager. She talked often of attending rehearsals of the Glenn Miller Orchestra with her bandmates, "We were allowed to watch as long as we behaved." Throughout her life, she loved playing piano and organ, as well as singing, especially harmonizing in choir. She was a skilled seamstress, and made countless curtains, Halloween costumes, and Easter dresses over the years. An extremely capable cook, Helen prepared meals for hundreds and hundreds of people through the churches they served, known for her famous Fish Fry meals, homemade pizza, and inimitable Christmas sugar cookies. She loved a good game - Jeopardy, jigsaw puzzles, the daily crossword in the newspaper, which she did in ink, every morning.
She will be remembered for her devotion to her faith, her family, and her friends, and for her wry sense of humor. When she heard of the late Queen Elizabeth II's death, whom she referred to as "the elderly queen," she marveled that she had outlived her. Like the Queen, Helen Post lived almost an entire century, through the invention of color TV, women gaining the right to vote, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Moon Landing, the invention of the cell phone, and the advent of the Internet. She will be greatly missed.
