Horace William Dickens (Bill) was born to Phynis Rea and Hallie Rose Thomas Dickens in Tulsa, OK November 11, 1928.
Bill is survived by his wife of 65 years, Janie Lea Hays Dickens, daughters Teresa Dickens of Bixby, Ok, Janis Hisey (Kent) of Broken Arrow, Ok, Patti Aldrich (Doug) of Tulsa, Ok and Gena Hicks (Tom) of Tulsa, Ok, 11 grandchildren (spouses) and 9 great grandchildren.
Bill graduated from Charles Page High School in Sand Springs, OK in 1947. He was soon drafted by the U.S. Army to the Korean War and served in Germany in the clean up after WWII.
Bill was a Superintendent at Dowell in Tulsa. He was a stickler for safety and earned many safety awards. He retired at age 55. He quickly returned to the workforce at Practical Engineering, where he stayed 12 years and retired again at age 68.
Bill's family and friends meant so much to him. He enjoyed barbequing for large family gatherings. He also loved traveling the USA, especially Colorado, with his wife, children and grandchildren. Bill collected WWII memorabilia and enjoyed viewing and riding in WWII vintage aircraft, crossword puzzles, and reading the newspaper with a cup of coffee each day. Being an excellent mechanic, everyone came to him for advice. He was a church bus driver for many years, as well as a deacon. Bill and Janie read scripture every night and prayed for each family member by name (and there were a lot) until very recent days. Bill also prayed for and had a heart for widows. He was also very involved in the Tulsa Food ministry for Needy Families.
A memorial service will be at 10:00 am Friday, October 5, at Moore's Southlawn Chapel, 9350 East 51st Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Interment will be 1:00 pm Friday, October 5, at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery, Ft. Gibson, OK.
