Long-time Tulsan, J.T. Stanberry, passed away peacefully at Clarehouse on May 14, 2018, following a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, and two daughters, Cheryl Lefler (Jim) and Gwen Stanberry; Granddaughters, Christen Heath (Andrew), Angela Williams (Alex), Danielle Exendine, and Candice Oliver; and five great-grandchildren: Jude and Maisie Heath, Anderson Williams, Michael Doke, Gabriel Oliver, and Asher Paolercio. J.T. was preceded in death by his parents, and his infant sister.
J.T. was born on May 17, 1933, in Big Cabin, Oklahoma to Mack and Dura Stanberry. He was the eldest of two children. He graduated from Big Cabin High School in 1951 and attended Northeastern Oklahoma A & M in Miami, Oklahoma, and Wichita State University, majoring in Finance. J.T. married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Elam, on February 21, 1953. He joined the U.S. Army in October, 1954, serving as a medical clerical officer at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX until his honorable discharge in October, 1956.
J.T. was a great baseball player. He played college ball at Northeastern and at Wichita State. He would later play for the New York Yankees farm team, based in McAlester, Oklahoma. He was employed in the finance and banking industry, serving as Credit Manager and later President for two major Credit Unions in the Tulsa Area. He retired from Dowell Federal Credit Union in 1995. He continued to serve on the Dowell FCU Board of Directors until his death. J.T. loved to play golf, watch baseball, and work on various home building, improvement, and repair projects. He also coached the Coleman Metals Pony League baseball team for several years, taking the team to National Finals in 1974.
The family will receive friends at Moore's Southlawn Chapel, 9350 East 51st Street, on Thursday, May 17, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A celebration of J.T.'s life will be held at Faith United Methodist Church, 7431 East 91st Street in Tulsa, on Friday, May 18, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Graham Memorial Cemetery in Pryor, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, or Clarehouse in Tulsa. Moore's Southlawn 918-663-2233
