Jack E. Bobek, 95 passed away peacefully the morning of December 26, 2020. He was a resident of Prairie House Assisted Living in Broken Arrow since 2017 and had lived in the Tulsa area since 1983. The family appreciates the help, care and friendship he received these past 3 years from the residents and staff of Prairie House.
Jack was born in Caldwell Kansas on June 18, 1925 to John L Bobek and Edythe Collins Bobek. Jack grew up in Dodge City, Kansas with his sister Dorothy and brother Don, graduating from Dodge City High School. He was a child of the Depression and the Dust Bowl. After graduating Jack worked for the Santa Fe railroad during the summer until he was dumped out of a pickup truck breaking his pelvis and cracking his hip.
After his recovery, Jack decided to attend college and went to Oklahoma A&M (OSU) to study engineering. Jack became a lifelong supporter of OSU Engineering. While at OSU, Jack was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and met his future wife, Sylvia Budd. Jack graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering in January 1949 and went to work for Carter and Jersey Production Research, in Tulsa. He was there until 1965 when he moved his family to Houston when Jersey Production Research was merged into Humble Oil and became Exxon Production Research. Jack worked for EPR until his retirement in 1983.
During his professional career Jack worked all over the world spending significant time in Peru, Saudi Arabia, Great Britain, and South Sumatra in addition to many other parts of the oil producing world. Jack was involved in the early development of Reservoir Simulation. In fact, immediately after Jack's retirement, Jack and a number of his fellow EPR friends were involved in writing a SPE Monograph on Reservoir Simulation that was first published in 1990 and is still sold.
After retirement, Jack and Sylvia moved back to Tulsa. With Jack's love of music, he became interested in barbershop singing. He joined The Tulsa Founders Chorus as well as singing with 2 quartets, "Never Too Late" and the BJs. The quartets sang for many years at birthdays, fund raisers, retirement homes and the state fair. When the BJs "matured" they didn't get out as much, but they continued to sing well into their 80's to brighten many people's days.
In 1993, a year or so after losing his 1st wife Sylvia, Jack was introduced to Louise Murphree by some of his barbershop friends, the Daltons. Louise had been in a car accident and Jack called her and visited her in the hospital. The rest they say is history!!! Louise and Jack were married in 1994 and shared 6 happy years together until he lost Louise in 2000.
Jack was preceeded in death by his sister Dorothy Montgomery, brother Don Bobek, wives Sylvia Bobek and Louise Bobek, and son Brad Bobek. Jack is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Becky and Tom Bailey and grandsons Jamie and Patrick; step-son and wife Andy and Diane Murphree and their children Allison (Steven) and Daniel; step-daughter and husband Marilyn and Bob Rains and their children Melissa (Shaun) and Aaron (Kristen) and step-daughter Monica Lebanowski and her daughters Megan (Kirk) and Malorie, granddaughters Lisa Smith Whiteley and Sheila Smith Irwin as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.
Jack never lost his love of music. He could always be heard whistling around Prairie House Assisted Living.
He will be remembered for his smiles, singing and whistling as well as his sage advice. A memorial service to celebrate Jack's life is scheduled for Saturday, August 21st, 2021 at 2pm at Moore Southlawn Chapel 9350 East 51st Tulsa, Oklahoma.
