Obituary

Jack C. Sanders was born, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, January 1, 1921 to Lilla Waters Sanders and Edward Calhoun Sanders and died in Tulsa, Oklahoma on October 3, 2016. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Helen C. Sanders; and his only child, Gary Sanders. He is survived by six nieces and nephews, David Sanders John Sanders, John Williams, Robert Williams, Suzanne Sanders Rickerts, and LaRae Sanders, and their families.

Jack was educated in the Tulsa Public Schools and attended the University of Tulsa prior to joining the United States Army Air Corp, where he served as a combat pilot with the 8th Air Force in England, during World War II. Following the war he continued his service as a combat ready pilot with the Oklahoma Air National Guard.

Jack served as a member of the Tulsa Fire Department from 1946 until 1966. During his 20 years of service Jack was a firefighter, company captain, district chief, chief of personnel, public information officer and Fire Marshal. He served as president of the local chapter of the International Association of Firefighters, and was active in representing the TFD in all phases of city government and department negotiations.

Jack was also a lifetime member of the Oklahoma State Firefighters Association, serving on the Board of Directors and as President in 1964. He retired from the TFD to become the State of Oklahoma Fire Marshal in 1966 and served in that position until 1984. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum, State and City of Tulsa Retired Firefighters, a lifetime member of the Oklahoma State Fire Chiefs; and Oklahoma Fire Marshals Association.

Jack was also a member of the National Fire Protection Association serving both as Chairman of the Board and as a member of the Executive Committee. Jack was appointed by President Ford to serve on the National Institute of Building Sciences Board, a member of the Special Advisory Committee for the Protection of Archives and Records Center, GSA, Washington DC.

Throughout the years his hobbies were golf, fishing, mountain camping, and he was a huge fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a member of First Christian Church of Tulsa, and served as Elder and Sunday school teacher. He will be remembered for his lifelong service to our Country, the City of Tulsa and the State of Oklahoma, always striving to make the world a better place.

A memorial service will be held at the Chapel at Oklahoma Methodist Manor, on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 2:00 p. m.
