On November 4, 1924, three major events occurred: Will Rogers celebrated his 44th birthday, Calvin Coolidge (a Republican of course) was elected the 35th President of the United States, and Jacqueline McDonald was born!! Her father almost missed her birth because he was out campaigning. For those that knew mom, you can see that her interest in politics started early.
Jacqueline was the only daughter of Flay V. McDonald and Fannie Mae Dyer Hurst McDonald. She had two half siblings: Dennis McDonald and Yvonne Hurst (McDonald). She graduated in the first graduating class at Will Rogers High School in 1942. After graduating, she held several secretarial jobs, her favorite being at Spartan Aircraft where she once took dictation for J. Paul Getty. He chose her, he said, because she was "so good looking."
In November 1, 1949, Jacqueline married Prentiss Shelley. They had two daughters and one son who died in childbirth. In their 30 year marriage they lived in several cities: Oklahoma City, Charleston, West Virginia, New Orleans, Louisiana, Poteau, Oklahoma, but most of their married life was spent in Tulsa. Unfortunately, they divorced in 1979. In 1982, she was lucky in love again and married Norman A. Lankford. They were happily married for 19 years and enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, Chicken Tracks, and being active in University Methodist Church.
For those of you who knew mom well, you know she was never to be interrupted on bridge day or beauty shop day, loved watching football and always appreciated a good looking man.
For the last five years, Jackie enjoyed living at Woodland Terrace Independent Living Apartments, where she was known for her beautiful smile and her mean bingo playing. Unfortunately, her health declined in 2016 and she passed away from respiratory failure Thursday morning, September 22 six weeks before her 92 birthday.
Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, both husbands and a host of friends. She is survived by two daughters and a nephew: Linda Kay Caughron (Bill) and Carol Jean McLane, and Marshall C McClure (Debbie) and daughter-in-law, Barbara Lankford. Grandchildren, Lisa Williams (David), Ryan McLane (Kaleigh), Christy Lynch (Ryan), Jennifer Martin, and Kirsten Crook. Two grand nieces, Jackie and Tori McClure, and one grand nephew, Trent McClure. Six great grandchildren ranging in age from 14 years to 11 months. They are Dawson,Taylor, and Legend Lynch. John, Matthew, and Abi McLane.
Per Jackie's request there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Woodland Terrace Library fund or the charity of your choice. Thank you for remembering our mother and grandmother. She will be missed.
