Obituary

7James Hopkins Cherry passed from this life on September 12, 2019, to be reunited with his wife Erma of 71 years who preceded him on January 1, 2019. James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He was known for his quick smile, gentle and humble spirit, and servant nature, demonstrated so vividly in the dedicated care for his family and his beloved Erma.

James was born on November 24, 1924 in Sulphur Springs, Arkansas to his parents Elige and Mabel Cherry. He was the middle child, with two sisters Winnie Lou and Barbara who have preceded him in death. James loved the farming life where he grew up on the border of Oklahoma and Arkansas. James was inducted into the US Marines in October 1943 during WWII and served in the Pacific. He endured action at Peleliu Island, Palua, Okinawa, Ryuku Islands and the Occupation of China. He is a prime example of the Greatest Generation' that served bravely, nobly, and humbly, never seeking recognition.

Upon his return from the service he met and married Erma Lea Allen, the love of his life, on May 2, 1947 in Pineville, Missouri, and thus began the beautiful adventure of their lives together. James and Erma lived 61 years in the same home in Tulsa, where they raised their three children. James worked and retired from Yuba Heat after thirty-six years of service. James was a faithful servant as a member of the Church of Christ. James loved RV travel with Erma, watching sports, playing cards, and caring for his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

James is survived by his three children, Phil (Jenifer) Cherry of Henderson, NV, Mike Cherry of Tulsa, and Tamra (Mike) Scott of Johns Creek, GA. Six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, four nephews and four nieces also survive him.

The pall bearers will be Jason Cherry, Matt Cherry, Grant Scott, and Mark Connett.
