Jim Smiley-James Burnett Smiley, age 83, passed away Monday, September 10th, after a long hospital stay following brain surgery due to complications from a bacterial sinus infection. Prior to that he was still working as the oldest licensed Architect in Oklahoma. Born in Sayre, Oklahoma in 1934 to his parents Henry Madison Green and Flora Johnson Green. His birth name was Joseph Benjamin Green. His father was tragically killed and 4 out of 5 siblings orphaned out when he was 2. Jim was adopted at the age of 3 in 1938 and given his new name.
Jim grew up in Chickasha, Oklahoma and attended the University of Oklahoma where he played football for Bud Wilkinson, received a full ROTC scholarship and received a Bachelor of Architectural degree on June 9, 1957. He commissioned in the USMC as a 2nd Lieutenant on June 10th, 1957 and immediately married the love of his life, Betty Smiley.
His 83 years of life were full of military experience, professional Architectural development, singing, coaching football, raising 5 children and later involved weekly with the Sunrise Rotary Club.
He was predeceased by his wife, Betty Smiley and sister, Bessie Oppelt. Surviving are his 5 children, Brad William Smiley, Kimberly Anne Smiley Walter and her husband Jim Walter, Susan Lynn Smiley Corn, Debra Lou Smiley and her fiance, Jeffrey Adams, James Douglas Smiley and his wife Paula Smiley, 10 grandsons and 3 great granddaughters.
Viewing will be 12 PM-8PM, Wednesday, September 12 and 8AM-10AM, Thursday, September 13, 2018 at Moore's Southlawn, 9350 E. 51st, Tulsa, OK. Memorial service will be 1:00 P.M., Thursday, September 13, 2018 at Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian, 4102 E. 61st, Tulsa, OK.
