James Bernard "Bernie" Bowers died peacefully in his sleep, while next to the love of his life Jennie on Thursday, February 1. Bernie was the middle son of Mildred and Joe Bowers. He was born on September 11, 1938 in Chickasha, OK. From an early age, he showed an artistic talent that became his life-long passion. Bernie was a high school athlete, running track and playing basketball. He attended Oklahoma State University earning a Bachelor of Art. While at OSU, Bernie was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity where he made lifelong friends and met his wife Jennie. Bernie and Jennie married after graduation from OSU and moved to Long Beach, CA where he attended the Art Center of School of Design. They returned to Tulsa in 1962 and Bernie began working in the art department at Sunray DX and continued a successful career in advertising and marketing at Hood Hope and Associates and Ackerman, Hood, and McQueen.
Bernie had various talents that became the focus of his life outside of his day to day work. He was an Elder and an active member of First Christian Church, a member of the board of Oasis Adult Day Care, as well as being an active member of the Heart Transplant Group associated with St. Francis Hospital and was a friend of Bill W.
He is survived by his family and friends, wife Jennie, daughters, Jamie and Shannon, son-in-law David, grandchildren Gray, Kern and Sophie, brothers and their wives Tom and Mary Bowers, Steve and Marilyn Bowers, brother and sister in law Sid and Linda Brown and their children and grandchildren.
A viewing will take place at Moore Funeral Home 9350 E 51st Street in Tulsa on Sunday, February 4th between 12-9pm. Formal visitation with family present will be from 3-5pm. A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 5th at 11am, in the Chapel of First Christian Church on Boulder Ave.
