Myrtle "Jane" Dodd (98), a longtime resident of Tulsa, was born May 24, 1922, and passed from this earthly life Wednesday, September 16, 2020, in Sioux City, Iowa. She was preceded by her parents Ben and Marie Wakefield, her husband Claude C. Dodd, her brothers Howard and Jack Wakefield, and a son Ben Arthur Dodd. She is survived by her son Steven R. Dodd, Livingston, Texas; daughter, Janice (Larry) Bunton, Jefferson, South Dakota; Ben's widow Karen Dodd, Selma, Texas; her brother Jack's widow Mary Wakefield, Tulsa; 17 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Jane was born Myrtle Marie Wakefield in Hibbing, Minnesota, to Ben and Marie Wakefield. After her birth, her family moved from Minnesota to Florida's warmer climate but then later settled in Tulsa. She graduated in Tulsa's Will Rogers High School's first graduating class and then took book-keeping at Tulsa Business College. When working as book-keeper for a store, she met another employee, Claude Dodd. They were married for 58 years. After World War II and Claude graduated from TU, they lived in Oklahoma, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Colorado, where he worked in the oil industry. Then they returned to Tulsa for Forrester Welding that later became Dodd Engineering and Welding Company (DEWCO) where Jane was the office and financial manager from the 1960's through the 1980's. Beside business, Jane was Claude's partner in his love for Christian missions. She helped him plan and carry out various missionary endeavors throughout the world. For example, while he was installing a water system for an orphanage in Kenya, Jane was teaching the women there to use a treadle sewing machine and to make dresses. Besides being an excellent seamstress, Jane was known for her delicious fresh blackberry pies. She was a member of Tulsa Baptist Temple. As a widow, Jane lived in her Tulsa home, then with her son Steve in Texas, and finally with her daughter Janice in South Dakota before moving to Sunrise Retirement Community, Sioux City, Iowa, in 2012, where she was loved and celebrated for her sense of humor. In lieu of flowers, Jane would like donations to impactwater.org.
