Obituary

Janice Lynne Barber
December 24, 1948 - December 17, 2023

Janice was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on December 24, 1948. She was a baby boomer, the middle child of 3 sisters. She grew up in Tulsa, Elk City, and Lawton before moving back to Tulsa for junior high school. She loved to cook, especially favorite meals and desserts of her father's. She and her sisters would also spend time at her maternal grandparents's farm outside of Ada, Oklahoma, playing with farm animals and cats. Her father, Robert DuFour, passed away in November 1962, leaving her mother, Wanda DuFour, a single mother with 3 daughters to raise. Janice took over cooking duties to help her mother.

Janice graduated from Memorial High School in May 1966. She attended Oklahoma State University to study to be a school counselor. During the summers, she worked at Sears department store at 21st and Yale. It was at Sears during the summer of 1968 that she met Larry Barber. She worked in children's clothing. He worked in men's furnishings as part of Sears's management program. They hit it off and got married at Boston Avenue Church on November 2, 1968. Janice and Larry were married for 55 years.

Janice and Larry had 2 children, Monica born in 1970 and Brian born in 1973. She was a homemaker and mother and sometimes the secretary/office manager for Larry's State Farm Insurance agency. Janice participated in the school PTA, taking part in Back to School night and helping with class parties. Janice was active in her church, participating in classes and bible studies and helping with Vacation Bible School during the summers with her kids. She also volunteered at the Little Light House in Tulsa for several years.

Various ailments led to a diagnosis of cardiomyopathy in 1994. On January 8, 1 995, Janice had a heart transplant at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She knew that God would provide and looked forward to her second life. This transplant gave her just short of 28 years of life to enjoy her family, friends, and activities.

Janice passed away on December 17, 2023 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at Moore's Southlawn Funeral Home in Tulsa, Oklahoma on January 20, 2024 at 2:00 PM. Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
