Jeremiah Matthew "Jere" Locke, 89, of Tulsa, OK, past resident of Muskogee, OK, passed away Thursday, August 4, 1977, at St. Simeon Episcopal Senior Community, in Tulsa, OK. Jere was born on Monday, January 9, 1888, in Alma, Crawford County, AR, to Samuel Bowman "S. B." Locke and Addie Ellis (Byars) Locke. He was married to Anna Louise (Morrison) Locke, and was the retired owner of Locke & Co., a cotton brokerage firm, and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Tulsa, OK. At one time, S. B. Locke, Jere's father, moved his family to Muskogee, OK, and purchased and lived in the historic home located at 533 North 12th Street, Muskogee, OK, which was built around 1908 by C. B. McCluskey who came here from Davis, Indian Territory in 1907. Mr. McCluskey was both a builder and President of the Oklahoma State Bank in 1908. Although he was unmarried, Mr. McCluskey shared his home with parents, brothers, nieces, and nephews. Jere's mother, Addie, is remembered for her work in the St. Paul Methodist Church, as a patron of the Muskogee Day Nursery and as a leader in the first community chest drive in 1932. Jere and wife, Anna, moved to Tulsa, OK, in 1975. Jere was survived by his wife, Anna of the home (died June 11, 1977); daughter, Mrs. Mary Louise Stanton (died November 5, 2006) and her spouse, Robert John Stanton (died June 18, 2003) of Tulsa, OK; 3 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and a lifetime of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John David Locke (died in 1966); and infant brother, Samuel Bowman Locke (died in 1892). Jere will be greatly missed in the days ahead, but his spirit and memories will live on in each of us, because we were privileged to have him in our lives.
