Jewell Elizabeth Ecker Peterson-Baker
On May 11, 2015, Jewell Ecker Peterson-Baker left this earth to be with her parents,
seven brothers, a sister, and two wonderful husbands: Howard L. Peterson and Dugan
Baker. Jewell was born on June 13, 1918 in Sperry, Oklahoma. Her father was
killed in a car accident, leaving her mother and 10 children alone at the height of the
Depression and Dust Bowl eras.
At age 16, Jewell began working full-time to help her family. She became a
talented hair stylist, instructor, and excellent businesswoman. She operated her own
beauty salon for over 50 years, serving many of Tulsa's most successful women. She
was elected as President of the Tulsa Hairdressers Association and served for many years.
Jewell won prestigious hair styling awards and competitions throughout her career.
Jewell was a woman with a zest for life and a vibrant personality that one never
forgets. She strove for excellence in everything she did. Her lifetime was spent helping
and caring for others. Jewell was also admired for her legendary cooking, hospitality
skills, and sense of humor. There was always a great deal of laughing and conversation
when you were around her. She imparted a fascinating sense of history to us through
her stories of growing up in rural Oklahoma with stories of her family and her long life.
She loved following Oklahoma State baseball teams and made many trips with her
mother all over the country to see them play.
Most of all, Jewell will be remembered by all of us for her love of God, generosity, and loyalty to her family and friends.
Jewell is survived by her son Roy Peterson and daughter-in-law Patricia Howard
Peterson of Tulsa; her sister, Wanda Marshall of Tulsa; 3 grandchildren, Kirk Peterson
of Cleburne, TX, Kerrie Peterson-Bussone of Hightstown, NJ and Dr. Kyle Peterson
of Spring, TX.; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be available 10 A.M.-8 P.M. Thursday, May 14 thru Friday May 15, and a memorial service honoring Jewell's life will be held at 10 A.M., Saturday, May 16, 2015, both at Moore's Southlawn Chapel in Tulsa. Moore's Southlawn 918-663-2233 share memories at
