Obituary

Our dad, Pa, and friend, Jim Tyler, went ahead of us to heaven on Friday, December 1, 2023. He was 98 years old.

He grew up in Nowata OK. He was a scholar and also very athletic. In high school, as quarterback, he took his team to state and won. Right after he graduated, he enlisted in the Army. As a brave survivor of World War II, Jim served as a Corporal in the 2012th Ordinance Maintenance Company. He was honored with numerous medals. He then attended Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (now OSU). He earned a bachelor's degree in math and worked as a petroleum engineer at Amoco Research in Tulsa. When he retired, he started a business selling pecans and firewood. That expanded to cattle and sheep.

Jim was an avid student of finance and economics. He loved to talk about it and teach it.
He loved dogs. In his 30's, he showed German shepherds. In his 70's and 80's, he was actively involved with the Tulsa Dog Club and ran the agility course. He earned a spot in nationals with his beloved border collie, Robbie 1. He was an avid sports fan and he enjoyed playing chess, bowling and golf. He became a Master Gardner, at 74.

Some interesting facts about Jim: He shared his birthday with his daughter, Karen Sue. He was the most determined person you could meet. He was awarded an academic scholarship to Zurich, Switzerland which he denied, so he could serve during World War II. He loved music of all kinds. He loved to make up songs about every day life. He grew up going to Cuchara, Colorado in the summer. When he was married with children, he would take his family there every summer. He loved to hike and canoe. He carried a 200 average bowling in Portland Oregon men's leagues. In the 80's, He created a successful computer program to pick race horses. He became a vegan in his 90's, and reversed his high blood pressure. In his 90's, he rarely ate sugar, salt or white flour.

Karen would like the family to know how important each of you were to him. He loved you.

Thank you so very much too the hospice workers who helped care for him the last months of his life. Not only did you care for him physically... you became his friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Christine Drennen Bayless, Troy Tyler and his twin, Robert Tyler, and his step daughter Lori Ann Wilson.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen Sue Dawson and his son-in-law, Dane, His three grandchildren, David Dawson and wife, Victoria, Michael Dawson and wife, Marie,
and Emma Dawson; and one great-grandchild, Finley Rae Dawson.
