Jimmie was born to Ross & Ethel Nickle. He grew up in Wagoner, Oklahoma and graduated from Wagoner High School in 1951. Jimmie was a catcher in the Detroit Tigers minor league system, then transitioned to being a surveyor. Jimmie married his soul mate Carolyn on August 15, 1953 in Wagoner, Oklahoma.
