Obituary

Jimmy (Jim) Edward Womack was born September 11, 1947 in Danville, Arkansas to Nannie Sue (Britt) Womack and Norman Lewis Womack. Jim passed away peacefully at age 77 on Saturday, January 25, 2025.

When Jim was 4 years old, his family moved to Sand Springs, Oklahoma. They lived with his mother's parents until Jim was in high school. Jim graduated in 1965 from Charles Page High School, in Sand Springs, where he was in the marching band and played the alto saxophone.

Jim attended Oklahoma State University where he met Glenda Lea Shirley on a blind date, through a mutual friend. He graduated in 1969 with his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts Education. Jim and Glenda were married on January 23, 1970. They lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma where Jim taught drafting and architecture at Edison High School. Jim and Glenda were blessed with two lovely children, Michelle Christine in 1972 and Scott Benton in 1974. Jim obtained his Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling at The University of Tulsa in 1975. With a young family, Jim worked most of the Edison High School sporting events at the ticket booth for extra money. They were well known to students and faculty. Glenda even made Michelle an Edison cheerleading outfit. Scott became buddies with a few football players. Go Eagles!!!

In 1977, Jim moved the family to Sand Springs and they attended the Sand Springs Church of Christ where Jim became a Deacon of Education. He coordinated countless Vacation Bible School programs, and the song "I Am a Big Green Frog and God Made Me" was born. While Michelle and Scott attended Allen Bowden K-8th grade, Jim was a school board member and later elected President. In the 1980's, Jim and Glenda were members of a square-dancing club and even performed at the Civic Center. How they had time for this and juggled both children's athletic schedules we will never know.

In his professional career, Jim was a teacher and counselor at Edison High School, guidance dean at Carver Middle School, and counselor at Memorial High School. He loved helping students with college applications and scholarships, and wrote many recommendation letters. Jim was a member of Oklahoma Counseling Association and served as President in 1992. He attended many conferences and visited numerous colleges over the years. In 1994, Jim and Glenda moved back to Tulsa. After 30 years of service, Jim retired from Tulsa Public Schools.

After retirement, he briefly worked as a counselor at Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences. He helped take care of his two granddaughters, Madalyn and Meagan. Later, he became a Saint Francis volunteer for 11 years.

While enjoying retirement, Jim and Glenda traveled in their motorhome across the country and took many trips including an European cruise. Later, they kept their motorhome in an RV park in Grove, Oklahoma where numerous family celebrations and 4th of July parties took place. Jim enjoyed walking through the park with his dogs (Andy and Bailey) and talking to the residents and campers.

Jim enjoyed singing in the church choir, going on outings with his wife and cousin Verlia and her husband Dale, being with family, and holding their dog (Molly).

Jim is survived by his beautiful wife Glenda, daughter Michelle and husband Dale of Tulsa, son Scott and wife Shelly of Tulsa, granddaughter Madalyn and partner Tyler of Tulsa, granddaughter Meagan and husband Brenden of Joplin. He is preceded in death by his parents and his stillborn brother Tommy Wayne.

The family is grateful for the compassionate care from Suncrest Hospice (Callie Nissen and Jennifer Rear) and Clarehouse.

Celebration of Life service will be held at Harvard Avenue Christian Church at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 31. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Clarehouse or Harvard Avenue Christian Church music department.
