Jo Ann Teague
Born at 4:16 AM, April 21, 1939, in rural Osage County, near Big Heart (now Barnsdall), OK. She was the only child of Lewis Otis Teague & Hazel L. (Goodknight) Teague.
Jo Ann's grandfather, Ben Teague, was a co-founder of a rail road town located between Dewey and Lenapah, OK. It was originally named Ayetla, was then renamed Wayside and is now a ghost town, no longer on Oklahoma maps.
She grew up in the oil field in Osage County, where her daddy worked for Phillips Petroleum Co. Her schooling was in the Webb City & Shidler system, graduating in 1957. She moved to Tulsa, OK, to attend Draughons School of Business, worked briefly for the Brookside State Bank, then in 1959 went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., retiring from SBC/AT&T after 41 years.
At an early age, Jo Ann was baptized into the First Christian Church at Shidler, OK, then later, as a teen-ager, she reaffirmed her faith and was baptized in the Salt Creek near her home.
Roller skating was a sport Jo Ann truly enjoyed. She met her husband, Richard L. "Monty" Montgomery, at the Continental Skating Rink in Tulsa. They later divorced and had no children.
In 1974, she met the love of her life, Robert L. Brewer and they enjoyed a relationship of nearly 38 years. During this time, travel by plane, train, auto and motor home was planned as often as possible, ranging from Mardi Gras to Europe. Oktoberfest was an annual event and music was almost always present. Holidays were always welcome!
Poetry was a hobby she enjoyed and was twice published, but she preferred to write brief poems for family and friends: "Reminisce"
There was an old lady
We called her Ma Bell.
Whoever worked for her
Has a story to tell.
Some people worked briefly
Others stayed quite a while.
We saw lots of changes
To maintain life's style.
But, if you worked hard
Had good attendance, with pride
Retirement was offered
At the end of the ride.
From cord board so key boards
From operators to the dial phone.
We had the best communications
The world had ever known.
Soon teletypes and ledgers
Went the way of the horse,
To be replaced by computers
And our laptops, of course.
We gather together and share our tales.
Just sipping a cup or drinking a drop
We share in good humor
And snack till we pop!
Genealogy was another of Jo Ann's interests and for several years, she pursued the family histories. She was a registered voter and had her roll number with the Cherokee nation. Her native American heritage was always of great interest and pride.
Jo Ann died on March 20, 2020, joining her late relatives and loved ones in the next life. She is survived by cousins Vicki Dixon (Steve), Craig Goodknight, Howard Goodknight Jr., Leroy (Kay) Goodknight, Carol (Les) Weirich, nieces, nephews, friends and her extended family of Robert D.
