Obituary

Lucy Joan Mullinax Sawyer, age 79, loving wife and mother, grandmother, Great Mom, passed away peacefully February 4, 2013 in the comfort of her Tulsa home, surrounded by loved ones at her bedside. She was born July 1, 1933 in Gap Creek Community of Marietta, SC and grew up there along with her parents Theodore and Lucy Mullinax and 11 siblings. She attended Slater Marietta High School, Marietta, SC. She loved to hike, backpack, bike, reading, and singing and traveling back to her roots in the SC Mountains. She volunteered her services to Meals on Wheels, and the Oxley Nature Center. She was a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers. She was a Wonderful person always smiling and always there to share her kindness with anyone in need. She and George were members of the Tulsa Bicycle Club and biked across Oklahoma ?Free Wheel? for several years in a row. They attended Calvary Baptist Church in Tulsa. Joan worked at the U.S. Postal Service, as a Rural Letter Carrier, for 22 years, and retired in 1993. She was a Wonderful Wife to George and Wonderful Mother and Grandmother and Great Mom to her Children. Joan is survived by, her loving husband George A. Sawyer of 58 years, they met on George?s 25 birthday, while he was serving in the US Air Force. They were married on December 23, 1954 in Marietta, SC. Surviving in addition to her husband are five Sons, Keith Sawyer of Tulsa; Kenny Sawyer and wife Pam of Tulsa; Eric Sawyer and wife Becky of Broken Arrow; Greg Sawyer and wife Cindy of Tulsa, and David Sawyer and wife Brenda of Tulsa. She has seven grandchildren, Kendi Templeton and Adam of Tulsa; Brent Sawyer and Chantelle of Mustang, OK; Trevor Sawyer of Tulsa; Allison Sawyer of Tulsa; Lesley Sawyer of Broken Arrow; Melissa Sawyer of Tulsa; and Victoria Sawyer of Tulsa. She has 6 great grandchildren, Piper, Rory, and Ripley Templeton of Tulsa, Storie Sawyer of Mustang, OK; Jonas Sawyer-Wheeler of Tulsa; and Evey Sawyer-Karloski of Broken Arrow, OK. Also, surviving are sisters, Kay Simmons, Lillian Hayes, and Zora Hyder all of Pickens, SC; Billie Wyatt of Marietta, SC; and Sandra Pusey of Tryon, NC; Brothers, Dale Mullinax of Travelers Rest, SC; and John Mullinax of Landrum, SC. Joan was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Betty Tankersley, Frances Mullinax and her brothers, Jimmy Mullinax and Theodore (Chip) Mullinax. Memorial contributions may be made to the ?Alzheimer?s? Disease Research?
Family will receive friends from 6:00 ? 8:00 PM Thursday, February 7 and Funeral Services 11:00 AM Friday, February 8, 2013 both in Moore?s Eastlawn Chapel. 918-622-1155.
