Obituary

John C. Baker, Sr., 86, a long-time Tulsa grocer, passed away Sunday, May 22, 1977, at Tulsa Christian Nursing Home, Tulsa, OK. He was born on Monday, October 20, 1890, to John Smith Baker and Minnie (Ceto) Baker. He had been a Tulsa resident since 1919, and married the love of his life, Clarice Olga (Mason) Baker on July 7, 1919, and they were married 58 years upon her passing on October 24, 1975. John was a former partner in the old, Peoples Exchange Grocery Market which was located at 113 E. First St. and, at that time, was one of the largest stores in Tulsa. He later became owner of the market, and it became Baker's Market. He sold the grocery store to IGA food stores and retired in 1961. He was a pioneer member of Second Presbyterian Church, Tulsa, OK, and was proud to have served as a Corporal in the United States Army in WWII. John is survived by his son, John C. Baker, Jr. of Tulsa, OK; daughter, Christine Robins of Tulsa, OK; 3 grandchildren, John C. Baker, III, Greg & Connie Robbins; great-grandson, Scott Baker; and a lifetime of friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Olga. John will be greatly missed in the days ahead, but his spirit and memories will live on within each of us, because we were privileged to have him in our lives.
