John Wesley Born passed away on July 19,2014 at the age of 89. John was born on July 2, 1925 in Enid, OK. He was the son of Charles Born and Carrie Hancock Born. He graduated from Enid High School in 1942 shortly after the United States entered World War II.
After a year at Phillips University, he enlisted in the Army Specialized Training Program. He was called into service in July 1943 and studied at Texas A&M before joining the 103rd Infantry Division at Camp Howze in Texas. He fought in the European Theatre and was awarded the Bronze Star before being discharged in January 1945.
John returned to college and entered Oklahoma A&M where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. It was here that he met his wonderful wife of 66 years, Betty May Harkness. He graduated in 1949 with a degree in Engineering and began a long distinguished career as a design engineer with oil rig manufacturer Lee C. Moore Corporation in Tulsa. He retired in 1989 as Chief Engineer of Production after 40 years.
John set an example for all of us throughout his life with his volunteer spirit. As a longtime member of John Knox Presbyterian Church he served as an Elder and Trustee. He became Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troup 124 in 1962 and served for 10 years, during which time his four sons all became Eagle Scouts. After retirement, he served as a Tulsa Zoo Docent for 21 years.
Along with his wife Betty, John is survived by four sons, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His son Charles and wife Kay live in Humble, TX along with his grandson Christopher and his wife Daniele, and their children Cameron and Carley. Son Robert Born lives in Glendale, AZ. Larry Born and his wife Nancy live in Tulsa; their children are Chuck of Denver, Gracie of Tulsa and Hank of Nashville. His son David and wife Fara live in Denver with ther children Spencer and Savannah.
Memorial services will be held at John Knox Presbyterian Church on Tuesday July 22nd at 1:00 PM. The family request in lieu of flowers that donations be made to John Knox Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, or the charity of your choice. Visitation will be Monday July 21st 6-8 pm at Moore's Southlawn 918-663-2233.
