Obituary

In his 72 years, John Dee Cook illuminated the lives of many with his talents, his kindness, and his unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his faith. As he peacefully met his Savior on May 5, 2024, at his home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, we bid farewell to a man whose legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Born on November 21, 1951, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, John was the cherished son of Herman Lee "Red" and Helen Cook. Growing up in Tulsa, he pursued his education with zeal, graduating from Will Rogers HS before furthering his studies at Northeastern State University, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in Art Education. His passion for art would become a defining aspect of his life, alongside his deep commitment to his family.

In 1978, John married Janet Cruz, embarking on a journey of love and companionship that spanned over four decades. Together, they raised three children-Mindy, Brandon, and Hope-nurturing them with love, guidance, and the values that John held dear.

John's talents extended far beyond the canvas; he was an accomplished artist, an amateur potter, and a skilled racer who captivated audiences as "Cookie Monster" on the mini sprint circuit. His professional endeavors were equally distinguished, as he dedicated 38 years of his life to McIntosh Services, retiring as Test and Balance Manager in 2017.

Yet, it was John's profound faith and his commitment to serving others that truly defined him. Throughout his life, he was an active member of his church community, lending his talents to various roles including AWANA Commander, trustee, and designer/decorator for missions conferences. His creativity and passion shone brightly in his involvement with children's plays and programs, where his set designs and constructions brought joy to many.

Beyond his professional and creative pursuits, John's impact was felt in the lives of countless young athletes whom he coached in baseball, football, and basketball, instilling in them not only the skills of the game but also the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance.

As we reflect on John's life, we are reminded of the profound influence he had on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, his generosity, and his unwavering faith will continue to inspire us in the days ahead. Though he may be gone from our sight, his spirit will live on in the memories we hold dear and the lives he touched. Rest in peace, John Dee Cook, knowing that your legacy of love and service will endure for generations to come.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Red and Helen as well as his brother Ronnie Cook. John is survived by his sister VaLinda Stout and her husband Rick. His wife, Janet, his children Mindy Ballard and her husband Jerad. Brandon Cook and Madison Tripp, Hope Clayton and her husband Josh.
