John was born in Wheatland, Indiana to Earl & Grayce Haley. In Junior High they moved to Deland, Florida where his parents had a motel. John graduated from Deland Sr High school June 7, 1955. He attended University of Tulsa where he majored in geology and math and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree on May 31, 1959. While at TU he met Diana Davis, whom he married on June 11, 1960. He was also an active member of ATO, Alpha Tau Omega, Fraternity. They welcomed their first child, Jennifer, in April of 1961 and 4 years later, April of 1965, Elizabeth joined the family.
After graduation, John worked for about a year at McDonald Douglas, then moved to Ponca City to work for Conoco. His job with Conoco included being part of the team that took delivery of one of the first IBM computers, serial number 25, that was sold outside the government. In the late 60's, John partnered with the 2 IBM reps at Conoco to start a new business, CISCO, to automate data entry for credit card receipts. That company was eventually bought by Bank of Atlanta. Rather than move to Atlanta, John chose to stay in Tulsa and partnered with his good friend and programmer, Mike Glover, to start Viking Software. In 1999, they sold Viking Software and John retired.
The Haley family moved to Tulsa in 1970 and soon joined a new Presbyterian congregation, Kirk of the Hills. Not long after joining, John & Diana became part of a Koinonia group that continued to meet regularly for over 25 years. John taught Adult Sunday class for 50 plus years, served on Session numerous times and was active in the Wed morning bible study. He also went as an adult sponsor with the high school group backpacking in Colorado and New Mexico.
John had lots of varying activities and loved the outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing and also had large vegetable and rose gardens. He took on the task of coaching Liz's soccer team when she was in late elementary school. Since he knew nothing about soccer he studied up by buying and reading books on how to coach soccer. Besides all of his activities at the Kirk, John was very involved with Southside Rotary Group and Literacy and Evangelism International when he wasn't golfing at the Oaks or Day Trading.
After retirement he and Diana traveled taking long trips to Europe, Australia & spending several winters in Florida. In July 2013 Diana passed from cancer after 53 years of marriage. On December 23, 2014 John married Angela Fleming. He was blessed to have found life partners to love twice in his life. After marrying Angela he continued to be active in the Kirk, LEI and Pathways Adult Learning Center. They were also active in a small group bible study and the Ponca City Book Club relocated to Tulsa OK.
