John Lockwood Hatheway was born on September 23, 1930 at St. John's Hospital in Tulsa Oklahoma. He was the third son of Grace Edna Lockwood Hatheway and Elliot Keith Hatheway. He grew up in a small house in Tulsa at 11th and Quebec with his older brothers George Keith Hatheway and Elliot Eugene Hatheway.
After graduating high school from Will Rogers Senior High School in 1948, John enrolled at Oklahoma A&M University in Stillwater Oklahoma. He became a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and studied Mechanical Engineering while enrolled in the Reserve Officers Training Corp. John spent the summers roughnecking in the oil fields until his graduation from Oklahoma A&M in 1953.
After college, John was called to active duty during the Korean War and served as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. After his military service ended, John began working at Cities Service Oil Company in Bartlesville where he became reacquainted with a beautiful woman he had met in Stillwater, Betty Lou Wells, who worked for Phillips Petroleum Company.
John and Betty began dating and were married 1956 in Stigler to begin their journey of 62 years together. After some moving around due to John's work, they settled in Tulsa and bought their first house. The next years were devoted to starting a family. Their first son, Eric was born in 1959 followed by Kent in 1962 and Lynne in 1964.
John's outstanding reputation in his profession earned him a position as president of Williams Brothers Engineering Company and he later served as an executive vice-president at TD Williamson in Tulsa. John's noteworthy career was recognized by his induction into the OSU Engineering Hall of Fame, and together, John and Betty were big supporters of Oklahoma State University, regularly attending sporting events and donating the funds for an Industry Projects Lab at the CEAT Endeavor Lab. John's leisure time was devoted to golf and sailing. After his retirement, John pursued his dream of owning farm and ranch land by purchasing 480 acres of land that was originally part of the Oklahoma Land Run.
John was preceded in death by his wife Betty in 2019 and is survived by his three children, Eric Hatheway, Kent Hatheway and Lynne Hatheway Anthony. His surviving grandchildren are Ryan Anthony and his wife Kristin, Kyle Anthony, Reese Hatheway, Taylor Hatheway, and his step grandson Connor Manley. He is also survived by his Daughters-in-Law, Bari Catherwood Hatheway and Jennifer Manley Hatheway. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly request donations be made to Montereau Benevolent Fund and the American Heart Association.
Visitation will be 5PM - 7PM, Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Moore's Southlawn Chapel, 9350 East 51st Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Graveside Service will be 11AM, Friday, June 2, 2023 at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5111 South Memorial Drive, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Reception to follow at Montereau Grand Riviera Lounge, 6800 S. Granite Ave. from 12:30PM-2:30PM.
