Obituary

John Darwin Hiatt
1931-2024
"God is so good, life is so wonderful, and I am so richly blessed." - Emmet Fox
John Darwin Hiatt passed away on October 3, 2024, in Broken Arrow, OK. He was 93 years old and had led a wonderful life. He was with family until the end, living with his daughter and her husband, Mary Jane and Ardell Simms of Broken Arrow, OK. In addition to Mary Jane, he is also survived by his two other children, John D Hiatt Jr, of Baltimore, Maryland, and Terri Lyn Duffy of Elbert, CO. John also had 7 grandchildren, Patrick Duffy, Erin Duffy, John Collier Hiatt, Mackenzie Hiatt, Connor Hiatt, Aiden Hiatt, and Taylor Lanning, four great-grandchildren, as well as multiple "bonus" family members.
At the time of Johns' passing he was divorced and had been married to Mary Lue Collier Hiatt Platt (deceased), Nita Bateman Stanley Hiatt (deceased), and Janice Dee Schneider Hiatt (also deceased). He was born in Bartlesville, OK, on July 27, 1931 to William Gurney Hiatt and Dorothy Reed Hiatt, both originally from Kansas. John attended Oklahoma A&M College (later known as Oklahoma State University) where he earned his bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. He was also a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. John went on to work a full career in the Petroleum Industry until his retirement from Shell Oil when he was 62 years old.
His early years of retirement were truly golden. He and his then-spouse, Dee, built a beautiful home in the mountains in Estes Park, Colorado. As they grew older, they opted to move back to Denver, CO, where they lived until their divorce in 2019. John then moved back to Oklahoma to live with his daughter Mary Jane and her husband, Ardell. He enjoyed a life with a large family presence as Ardell had 4 wonderful adult children and 6 grandchildren who visited often.
The Simms family, on behalf of John, would like to thank Saint Francis Hospice and the team who supported the family at the end of his life. All will miss John, and if anyone would like to recognize our loss, please send donations to Saint Francis Hospice in lieu of cards or flowers.
