John Michael "Mike" Kearby, 36, of Tulsa, OK, died Wednesday, August 3, 1977, in Austin, TX, after suffering a massive heart attack while flying from Corpus Christi, TX, to Tulsa. Mr. Kearby, his wife and their daughter, were returning from a weekend fishing trip when he began having chest pains. Mrs. Kearby, a student pilot, helped land the twin engine plane at Luling Airport, 45 miles south of Austin. He was taken to a Luling, TX, hospital and later transferred to the Austin hospital where doctors confirmed he had suffered a heart attack. Mike was a member of the International Aerobatic Club and the Experimental Aircraft Association. He was proud to have served as a Specialist E-4 in the United States Army for three years. Mike was born at Selfridge Field, Air National Guard Base, Harrison Charter Township, MI, on Wednesday, June 25, 1941, to Neel Ernest Kearby and Virginia (Cochran) Kearby. He was married to Eileen (Shores) Kearby, and was a sales manager for Eagle Aviation. He is survived by his wife of the home; daughter, Julie Kearby, of the home; mother, Virginia Shoemaker of San Antonio, TX. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Robert Neel Kearby, and Kenneth C. Kearby. Mike will be greatly missed in the days ahead, but his spirit and memories will live on within those that were privileged to have him in their lives.
