John was born April 23, 1929 in Sioux Center, Iowa, to Jacob and Gertrude (De Zeeuw) Mol. He grew up in Sioux Center and attended West Branch #1, a one-room schoolhouse for the first eight grades, then graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1946. John entered military service with the U.S. Marines in September of 1951, during the Korean War. He was stationed in San Diego and Barstow, California. While serving in Barstow, John met his future bride, Helen Jean Brockman. They were married on June 10, 1953 in Winnebago, Minnesota. John was honorably discharged in September 1953 and returned home to the family farm near Sioux Center.
While living in Sioux Center he was a member of First Reformed Church where he was both an elder and deacon, and taught Sunday School and Catechism. He also served on the Missions Committee.
In 1980, the couple moved to Jenks, Oklahoma, where he and Helen both worked at Oral Roberts University for 19 years. While there, they attended Christ Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and on the Missions Committee.
John, foremost in life, loved serving his Lord. He also found great joy in farming, gardening (Oral Roberts University gardener), and watching his children and grandchildren play sports. John was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Dodgers.
He is survived by his four children; Patricia (Bob) Parks of Tulsa, Jim (Lisa) Douglas of Escondido, CA, Duane (Marilou) Mol of Galesburg, IL, and Mary (Kelly) O'Brien of Lawrence, KS, and four grandchildren, Tripp Parks and Rebecca Parks, both of Denver, CO, Kelsey O'Brien of Lawrence, KS, and Samantha O'Brien of Omaha, NE. John is also survived by his sister Joanne Johnson of Des Moines, IA.
He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, his parents, brother Neal and wife Lydia Mol, sister Ethel and husband Clarence Wiersma, sister Dorothy and husband Wilbert Vande Berg, and brother-in-law Stan Johnson.
