John M. Powers, 85, of Owasso, OK went to be with the Lord on July 31, 2018. He was born to George and Rosa Alice (Decker) Powers on December 3, 1932 in Thayer, KS.
John graduated from Thayer High School in 1950. He received his bachelor's degree from Midwest Christian College and then worked toward his Master's degree at Lincoln Christian College, Lincoln, IL, where he met his future wife.
He married Alice Lucile Kaufman in 1958, and they were happily married for 58 years.
John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. After accepting Christ as his Savior in 1943, he dedicated his life to sharing Christ with everyone he met. John ministered in LaFountain, KS; Edgewood, Carbondale, and Colchester, IL. After moving to Oklahoma, his first ministry was at Town & Country Christian Church in Tulsa. In 1970, with the help of the NOEA (Northeastern Oklahoma Evangelizing Association), John started Christview Christian Church (Tulsa), where he and Alice served for 28 years. Besides being involved with evangelizing associations in planting new churches, John had a passion for missions. He served on several mission boards, and he & Alice visited various mission fields, encouraging and ministering to missionaries around the world.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, on September 6, 2016.
He is survived by their two children: daughter Gay (Powers) Adams and her husband Mark of Prairieville, LA; and son Brent and his wife Charmin (Scott) Powers of rural Altoona, KS.
John is also survived by three dear grandchildren: Kaila Joy (Adams) Martin and her husband Josh, Jared Phillip Adams, and Karali Elizabeth Powers; as well as a sweet great-granddaughter, Evelyn Rosa Martin.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Rabern, Fred, and Floyd; and two sisters, Ermal and Orpha.
Visitation will be held Friday evening, August 3, 2018, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Moore's Southlawn Chapel, 9350 E. 51st, Tulsa, OK.
A Celebration Service for John will be held Saturday morning, August 4, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at First Church, 10100 N. Garnett, Owasso, OK.
A Graveside Service will be held Saturday afternoon, August 4, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at the Thayer Cemetery in Thayer, KS.
