Obituary

Joseph Michael Cody passed away peacefully at St. John's Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Thursday, March 20th, 2014, in the presence of his loving family.

Joe was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Elmer Michael Cody and Susan Hogan Cody on March 2, 1928, the oldest of six children. He was a lifelong resident of Tulsa and attended Marquette Elementary School and High School. Joe attended the seminary at Bethany, Oklahoma, for one year and then spent four years in the Air Force, mostly in Fairbanks, Alaska. Returning to Tulsa, he worked at McDonnell Douglas and then joined the postal service, where he was a mail carrier until his retirement.

Although Joe was a private and shy man who never married, he thoroughly enjoyed the company of his large extended family. He loved history, particularly Native American history, and all sports. Joe was a regular at all of the TU and ORU college football and basketball games, a season ticketholder for years of the Tulsa Oilers, and later of the Tulsa Drillers. He was a dedicated fan of the Tulsa Oilers hockey team as well. His special favorite was pro baseball, and he took his nieces and nephews on sports-related trips to see pro games. He was an avid reader of all kinds of history and had a large library that he thoroughly enjoyed. Joe was an enthusiastic participant in many family card games (even taught several of them how to play poker!) and activities and attended many of his family's own sports contests. He would have made a wonderful teacher.

Joe was pre-deceased by both of his parents, as well as by his brother Billy and sister Mur. He is survived by his sister Ann O'Brien of Tulsa, his brother Tom (Betty) of Pueblo, Colorado, and his brother John (Mary Lou) of Denver, Colorado. He is also survived by over 50 nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews.

The viewing will be at Moore's Eastlawn, 1908 S. Memorial Dr., Tulsa. The rosary will be held at 5:00p.m. on Sunday, March 23rd, at Moore's Eastlawn, and the funeral Mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1727 S. 75th E. Ave., Tulsa, on Monday, March 24th.

We will continue to love and miss you always, Joe. You gave us so much and are an integral part of the fabric of our lives. "May the road rise to meet you…and may God hold you in the palm of his hands."
