Joseph (Jody) Dorsett Jr was born on Epiphany, January 6th, 1959 in Louisville, KY. He passed awat on July 10th, 2024 in Tulsa, OK. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph (Joe) and Betty Jo (Worthington) Dorsett. He leaves behind his son Joseph (Tripp) Dorsett III, his sister Ann Dorsett, many cousins and many friends.
Jody was a man of many talents and vocations. He attended Temple University as a History major, playing Defensive End on their football team. It was there he joined ROTC which led to a career in the Reserves from 1979 to 1994, where he retired as a Captain who specialized in anti-armor in the 157th Infantry Brigade/315th Infantry Regiment. As the Reserves only employed him for 180 days in the year, he spent his off time pursuing a variety of jobs which gave him an interesting set of skills.
In his later life, Jody was an active member of the LCMS where he felt the call to reach out in a mission-focused capacity. This led to him attending Concordia University Wisconsin to study lay ministry. He was later ordained as a minister in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in 2019, and retired as a pastor Emeritus in 2023. Jody strove to meet people where they were. He was driven to help people who lived on the fringe of society.
Jody married later in life and was thrilled to become a father at 48. He was not so thrilled when people asked him about his "grandson." He and Tripp enjoyed fishing and traveling together, especially to science fiction conventions and an awesome three week visit to Australia in the winter of 2013.
Jody was an active member of the Baen's Bar online forum, where he made friends with many people and ended up getting a short story published in the first of the popular 1632 series, A Ring of Fire. Tripp will be able to read many stories and come across funny characters named after his Dad. Through that group Jody was part of a charity named Read Assist an early pioneer in assisting people with disabilities to get access to books. Jody had a huge heart and loved being able to help people and teach them about the love and forgiveness he found through Christ.
In lieu of flowers can we say: please make a donation to a charity of your choice in Jody's memory.
