Obituary

Joyce Irene Hegwer was born July 10, 1927, in Bartlesville, OK and passed away at her home on March 30, 2023. She was born to Henry "Hank" Edward Hegwer and Margaret Eleanor McCormick Hegwer. Joyce graduated from Central High School in 1945. She married her husband of sixty years, Kenneth Merle Scroggins, on March 22, 1950. During their marriage they would take many vacations, including Hawaii and the Holy Lands (which was her favorite place to visit). Throughout their marriage she would have four daughters, Suzanne, Jeannie, Carol, and Danilu. Joyce was a second grade Sunday school teacher at Harvard Avenue Baptist Church for over twenty years and would then to go on to work Vacation Bible School at Southwood Baptist after they joined there. She loved to serve the Lord.

One of her favorite interests was history. Everywhere in her house had some history sprinkled throughout it. She enjoyed many books about Egypt and Mesopotamia. This love of history led to a love for genealogy. She spent many days at the Tulsa Libraries searching through old records trying to track her family history from parts of Kansas to New York City (Ellis Island to be exact), and finally Germany. This was a love that much of her family shared.

She was an amazing painter who painted on canvases, shirts, books, anything she could get her hands on. They were soon turned into magnificent works of art. This is a trait that she kept all to herself... Her artistic ability was never ending. I am pretty sure that all of us received a beautifully sewn outfit, for either us or one of our dolls.

She loved gardening and bird watching. She had a very large flower garden full of iris and hydrangeas. No matter where she was sitting at home, she could always see her bird feeders. She had bags of bird feed ready to refill whenever necessary.

A pastime of our families is playing games. And Joyce was always the biggest winner. No matter what we played. Every Christmas we would play Bingo and even up until this past Christmas, she kicked all of our behinds. She won herself a Braums gift card every chance she got, as she loved ice cream. She was an incredibly lucky lady. And she absolutely loved Christmas and the holidays and loved to spend that time with family.

But her favorite past-time was none other than Tulsa University Sports. This included golf, volleyball, softball, and of course basketball and football. She and Carol were long standing members of the Women of the Hurricane Club. They did many fundraisers to help buy equipment for every sport. They held walk-a-thons, jewelry and flower sales, and many luncheons. She was very involved, and she was even the secretary in 2002 and 2003.

Her love for painting extended to TU sports. She painted many different items for fundraisers during her time in the club. Her and Kenneth loved TU sports so much, that when they were looking for a house in Tulsa, they wanted it within walking distance to Skelly Stadium. This house is where she would stay until 2022. They hardly ever missed a TU home football or basketball game, until their health began to decline.

Another big love in her life was animals especially cats. She had many of them during her life. This was a love passed down to all of her kids and grandkids. She loved petting and cuddling with all of Mack and Carol's animals when the last of hers was gone.

Something we will always remember is her patience and the fact that she would sit there and listen to us talk. We could tell her long tales and she would sit there and listen, and then ask you about it the next time she saw you. That was her way of showing us she loved and cared for us.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter, Jeannie, her younger brother Daniel Hegwer, and her son-in-law Larry Rogers. She is survived by daughters Suzanne Rogers, of Oklahoma City, OK, Carol Haltom and husband, Mack of Tulsa, OK, and Danilu Denson and husband, Perry of Broken Arrow, OK, several grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, family and friends may make contributions to their favorite charity.
