G. Lance Miller, pioneering physician, avid outdoorsman, and enthusiastic golfer left this world July 20, 2018. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Lance lived life with passion, courage, and drive. He was a devoted husband to Judy, his wife of over 56 years, and a loving and engaged father and grandfather. Of his great passions, one was his profession as a physician where he was a pioneering oncology and hematology practitioner in Tulsa and was loved by his patients, his staff, and many colleagues. Lance was equally passionate about his leisure pursuits, giving himself fully to whatever activity he was involved in at the time. Most of his interests were focused on the great outdoors; golf, fishing, hunting, and enjoying time spent at the lake with family and friends. He also enjoyed travelling the world with Judy and other close friends with trips to the Orient, Ireland, Scotland, and other stops in Europe as highlights.
Born in our nation's capital to Margaret Ann Miller and Robert Erlewine Miller. Lance was taught early in life the value of hard work, dedication, and a solid education. Lance decided early in his life that he wanted to pursue a career in medicine. He graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1957 and matriculated to Northeastern State College and then on to the University of Oklahoma Medical School graduating in 1964. He completed his internship at St. John Medical Center.
On December 28th, 1962, Lance married Judith "Judy" Ann Houston who was at the time a nursing student at St. John Nursing School.
Once Lance graduated from Medical School, the young family travelled to Little Rock Arkansas where Lance completed his residency in internal medicine and then was accepted as a Fellow in the Hematology and Oncology program, which he completed in 1968. During this time, their sons Robert Bruce (`64), Scott Allen (`65), and Brian Mathew (`67) were born. After his fellowship was complete, the family moved back to their hometown of Tulsa where Lance was the third partner to join Goen and O'Meilia internal medicine practice. He eventually became the second sub-specialist in Oncology and Hematology in Tulsa.
These years were full of activity and great family memories as Lance enjoyed coaching his three son's sports teams and encouraged them to excel in their other academic and extracurricular activities at school. There were also weekends at Grand Lake, family vacations, and trips to watch his beloved Oklahoma Sooners play football in Norman.
Lance contributed to the Tulsa and Oklahoma medical community in ways other than his medical practice. He served as the youngest Chief of Staff at St. John's Medical Center, held posts as President of Tulsa County Medical Society and Oklahoma State Medical Association, a member of the faculty at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine-Tulsa, and founding board member of Community Oncology Alliance (COA). In 1982 he established Oklahoma Oncology with his partners from which he retired in 2010.
Lance was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Robert and Laura Johnson; granddaughter, Elizabeth Lee; grandson, William Lance; son, Scott and Tanya; granddaughters, Hannah Caroline, and Molly Campbell; son, Brian and Janessa; granddaughters, Katherine Ann, and Jordan Elizabeth; and sister, Susan.
