Laura ?Nan? Johnson
Laura ?Nan? Johnson, 78, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 3, 2013. She was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, on June 28, 1935, to Edna and C.M. Francis.
Nan graduated from Alva High School in 1953. Later that year she met her husband, John B. Johnson, Jr., while they were students at the University of Oklahoma. They were married in 1956 and were blessed with three children, Bryan Johnson (wife, Jill) of Tulsa, Laura Johnson Ratliff (husband, Reeder) of Oklahoma City and Brad Johnson of Medford, Oregon, and six grandchildren, Allison and Sarah Johnson, Paul and John Ratliff and Abby and Katie Johnson. She also left her adored King Charles Spaniel, Annie.
Nan?s family and many friends knew her as a loving, caring and very special person. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. Nan and John had a marriage made in heaven for 57 years. They shared many interests in common, including traveling, dining out, movies and, in general, being with family and friends. Perhaps best of all was that they simply enjoyed spending time alone with each other. She exemplified what was proper and fine and passed these traits on to her children and grandchildren. If the phrase ?being beautiful inside and out? ever applied to anyone, it personified Nan. She was a consummate lady.
Nan was a music major in college and notably performed in a female sextet with the OU men?s glee club on the Ed Sullivan television show. Her love of music extended to singing in the Chancel Choir at Boston Avenue Methodist Church for 30 years and performing solos at church services, weddings and funerals.
At one stage in her life, Nan was an avid tennis player and enjoyed participating in the Junior League of Tulsa, Children?s Day Nursery, United Cerebral Palsy and Pi Beta Phi Alumni Association. More recently, she became an ardent bridge player and was active in The Colonial Dames, an investment club and book club (?Bookies?).
A memorial service will be held at Boston Avenue Methodist Church on Thursday, August 8, at 3:00 P.M., at 1301 South Boston, Tulsa, OK 74119.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Boston Avenue Methodist Church, (General Endowment Fund), Tulsa Opera, 1610 South Boulder, Tulsa, OK 74119, or The Colonial Dames of America, 417-421 East 61st Street, New York, New York, 10065.
