Obituary

Lawrence Emmet Metz, longtime Tulsa resident, passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 98 on October 22, 2022. He was born on a farm near Newkirk, OK on August 19, 1924 to Carl and Lora (Kelle) Metz. The family moved to a farm north of Blackwell, OK in 1929. Lawrence (Larry) attended Independence Rural School and graduated from Blackwell High School in 1941. He received an Associate of Arts degree from Northern Oklahoma College in 1943. He then joined the Navy V-12 program and was sent to Texas Christian University for training. There he received a commission as Ensign in the United States Naval Reserve at the Columbia University Midshipman School in New York City. After further training at the Amphibious Training base in Fort Pierce, FL he reported aboard LST 920 in Norfolk VA. The ship served in the Pacific theatre and was involved in the battle for Okinawa. When asked about his experiences in WWII, Lawrence once said it was like being on a vacation, except for the danger!

Lawrence was released from active duty in September of 1946 and enrolled as a student at the University of Oklahoma where he was chapter President of the Delta Chi fraternity. He received a Bachelors of Business Administration from OU in 1948. After graduation he worked as a staff adjuster for General Motors Corporation. In 1951 he was employed by the Internal Revenue Service and worked as an Internal Revenue Agent until retirement in 1983. He was a Certified Public Accountant, a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants. Lawrence was also a retired Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve and served with Naval Security Group 8-4 in Tulsa. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1968.

On May 12 1956, Larry married the love of his life, Mary Alice Watson, at Wheeling Avenue Christian Church in Tulsa. They met in a young adult's fellowship group at Boston Avenue Methodist Church and, quite unlike Larry who never acted impulsively, he proposed after their third date. They spent 66 wonderful years together in their home in Tulsa where they made a lifetime of beautiful memories together.

Lawrence was welcomed into heaven by his parents, his siblings Wilma Eakins and Albert Metz, and his precious grandson Logan Meier. He is survived by his wife Mary Alice Metz with whom he shared three wonderful children, son Dr. David Metz; daughter Judi Meier and her husband Calvin Meier; son Steve Metz and his wife Kim Metz. He is also survived by his brother Myron Metz. Lawrence adored his five grandchildren Lindsay Van de Vyvere and her husband Josh Van de Vyvere; Whitney Meier Schank and her husband Ryan Schank; Carson Meier and his wife Amanda Meier, Logan Meier and Grayson Metz. He is also survived by his two great-grandchildren Theo and Ivy Van de Vyvere, as well as many nieces and nephews.
