Obituary

Leo D. Surko, 87, went to be with The Lord on Christmas night, December 25, 2012. He was born March 20, 1925 in Amsterdam, New York to Theodore and Anastazia Surko who were both direct immigrants from the Ukraine. After Leo graduated from Amsterdam High School he completed his training at Roosevelt Aviation College. He then began his 44 year career with American Airlines in 1944 earning 75cents per hour. Leo moved to Tulsa in 1946 to advance his long time successful career with American Airlines at the Tulsa Maintenance Base facility.
He married Irene E. Sprenger from Hartman, Arkansas in 1950, who preceded him in death in1979.
He is survived by his children: Dorothy A. Zeller of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Theodore D. Surko of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Robert J. Surko of Dallas, Texas and William A. Surko of Tulsa. He is also survived by four grandchildren: David E. Zeller of Lakevilla, Illinois, Donald W. Zeller of Raleigh, North Carolina, Nicholas F. Surko and Alexandra M. Surko of Dallas, Texas and two great grandchildren: David E. Zeller Jr. and Keanu W. Zeller.
Leo was a world traveler with his favorite destinations including Hawaii, the Caribbean, Europe and he enjoyed many trips on numerous cruise lines. He was also an avid sports fan. He was an accomplished bowler and played on the championship American Airlines Jet Jobs team in his earlier years. He ushered at University of Tulsa basketball and football games. He especially enjoyed baseball and followed the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals and the Tulsa Drillers.
He was very strong in his Christian faith and attended services at St. Pius X. Catholic Church when Mass was celebrated in the barn off of 21st St. Leo then was involved with the original construction of the current St. Pius X. sanctuary and school.
Leo was known for his devotion to American Airlines, his family, and his church.
He was loved by all those that were fortunate to meet and know him and will be missed. Those that loved him know he is in a much better place.
