Leonard Wade Wood, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, educator, coach, and community leader, passed away on January 6, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on December 9, 1935, to Leonard Adrian and Virgie Betty Wood in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Leonard lived a life marked by passion, dedication, and a deep commitment to his family, his profession, and his community.
Leonard graduated from Sallisaw High School and went on to play basketball at Connors State College and Northwestern State University, where his love for sports blossomed. His leadership and athleticism on the court were just the beginning of a lifelong devotion to coaching and mentoring others.
After obtaining his master's degree, Leonard dedicated 40 years to the education system, serving as a teacher, coach, and administrator. His most notable role was as Superintendent of Berryhill Schools, where he worked for 13 years and retired 25 years ago. Leonard was known for his unwavering commitment to the success of his colleagues and students and the betterment of the community. He was a guiding force in the lives of countless students and colleagues.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Leonard was a lifelong lover of the land. He enjoyed his cattle ranch and horses, living a fulfilling life after retirement. He also had an enduring passion for basketball, playing the game he loved well into his 70s, and even winning a silver medal in the Senior Olympics.
Leonard's legacy extends beyond his career and hobbies. He was a compassionate and selfless man who always made time to help others. His kindness, generosity, and the positive impact he had on so many lives will never be forgotten.
In his retirement, Leonard and his beloved wife, Joyce Eileen Wood, spent many years traveling the world with their children, creating cherished memories. Leonard was an avid traveler who took great joy in experiencing new cultures and broadening his horizons.
He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Virgie; and grandson: Dillon Scrivner.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joyce Eileen Wood; his sister, Sandra Blair and husband Doug; his daughter, Kimberly Scrivner; his son, Les Wood; and his grandson, Zachery Scrivner; brothers in law: Gene Williams and Bobby Williams and wife Darlene. He leaves behind a rich legacy of love, laughter, and service that will be remembered by all who knew him.
A celebration of Leonard's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 18th at View Acres Baptist Church, Berryhill. His family asks that any donations in his memory be made to the charity or organization of your choice, reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping others.
