Marvin Leroy Downs, our beloved husband and father, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 30, 2018 in Broken Arrow, OK at the age of 69. He was born June 11, 1949 in Pryor, Ok to William Truman Downs and Lynda Rutledge.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Truman Downs and Lynda Rutledge; brother, Bill Downs and brother Bob Neil Downs. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Brenda Downs; daughter: Amber Chong and husband Kyong, and two grand-daughters, Rebekah and Mia of Broken Arrow; daughter: Kimberly Denise Downs and grandson Kaiden of Tulsa; Sister-in-law Carole Downs of Locust Grove; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Leroy was baptized at the Church of Christ in Shidler, OK on June 14, 1959 at the age of 10. He graduated from Shidler High School in 1967. Following graduation, he attended Oklahoma State Tech in Okmulgee, OK for 1 year where he earned a certificate in small engine repairs then went on to attend OSU in Stillwater for one year. His career as a route salesman started in 1973 and continued through 2007 with various companies. His final job before retiring in 2013 was as a Utility Specialist at Melton Truck Company.
Leroy first met Brenda at church in 1968 and after dating for three years they were married on March 26, 1971 in Pawhuska, OK. Leroy and Brenda Downs attended Garnett Church of Christ for 30 years and have been members at Park Plaza since 2004. He had such a servant's heart and love for people that Leroy was involved in various ministry areas at both congregations. He served many years as a Deacon, 1st grade Sunday School teacher, communion server, and JOY Bus Driver. He worked with Park Plaza's furniture ministry delivering donated furniture to people in the community, Meals on Wheels of Tulsa, and Whiz Kids at Contact Church. He enjoyed talking to people and always had a kind word of encouragement to say or a hug to share, so he enjoyed being a part of the visitation team for the sick, hospitalized or home bound church members.
Leroy was passionate about supporting his kids and grandkids by faithfully attending their sporting events, school programs and extra-curricular activities. Other favorites of his were watching OU football, Thunder Basketball and the Dallas Cowboys. Some of his hobbies over the years included wood working in high school, building and racing rafts in the Great Raft Race of Tulsa in the 80's, drag racing at Tulsa Speedway, riding motorcycles, playing horse shoes and attending car shows.
He leaves many loving memories with his family and friends.
