Obituary

LeRoy L. Sammons, 91, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born January 13, 1930 in Nebraska City, Nebraska, to Helen Doris (Chaney) Sammons. LeRoy married JoNelle Rhiddlehoover on May 2, 1953 and she preceded him in death in 2014.

LeRoy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Claremore. He completed his education in the 8th Grade and then began working on his grandfather's farm. LeRoy operated a cable car for the City of Omaha, Nebraska and then began driving for Greyhound Bus Lines until his retirement in 1985, achieving many safety awards. LeRoy was in the military on two separate occasions; one from 1947 to 1948 and then again from 1950 to 1953. His second enlistment was to retain his pilot's license but due to the Korean War outbreak he was sent to Korea and unfortunately did not get an opportunity to fly due to an abundance of pilots. He was able to enjoy an Honor Flight to Washington, DC in 2014. LeRoy served as a Volunteer Fire Department Chief in Carter Lake, Iowa as well as a member of the City Council there. LeRoy was also a 50-year Mason as well as member of the Elks Club and VFW. LeRoy had many hobbies including camping, flying, golfing, CB/Ham Radio operator and Facebook Solitaire. He enjoyed all of their many travel destinations but the highlight of their traveling was to Hawaii.

LeRoy is survived by daughters, Kelly (Scott) Dipboye and Leisa Gilliland; son, Rick (Debra) Sammons; brothers, Gary Sammons and Jim Sammons; grandchildren, Jeremy (Cassandra) Sammons, Joshua Sammons, Alex Dipboye, Dustin (Adreinne) Gaddy, Matthew Gilliland; great-grandchildren, Mia, Avary, Rylee, Norah, and Ellis.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and current weather we will have a memorial service and celebration of life at a later date.
