Lewis William Broughton was born in Logan, Iowa on September 13, 1949. He was the second child of Elly and Dorothy Broughton of Modale, Iowa. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Frank Broughton, sister Diane Barrineau, and grandson William. He was married to Elaine (Penning) Broughton for 50 years. He is survived by his wife Elaine; son Chad and wife Lindsay; son Dan and Holly; grandchildren Courtney, Tyler, Braddox, and Luke; multiple cousins, nieces, and nephews that will miss him greatly.
Lew served in the Air Force from August 1967 to August 1971, reaching the rank of SGT. He received numerous awards during his military service including the Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and Air Force Good Conduct Medal. The military was very close to Lew's heart, and he was very active in veterans affairs. He was an active member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, was the president of Chapter 524 and the state council, and was the Chapter Vice President of the Air & Space Forces Association. He was also a member of the VFW and American Legion and served on several national committees. He was a mentor for many in the military and would never pass up an opportunity to help a soldier or their family.
His love of family and veterans made a great impact on many. His sense of humor was a little off at times but that is what made him an interesting character to be around.
