Lola Marie (Rust) Dumas, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away at the age of 95 after a lengthy illness on February 26, 2016. She was born January 9, 1921, in Glenco Oklahoma to Walter and Hazel Rust.
She grew up on a small farm in the town of Hydro, Oklahoma. She had an older sister, Zola, and a younger brother, Leo. She was a long time member of Yale Avenue Christian Church in Tulsa. After high school she attended Southwestern University in Weatherford for two years and then began teaching. During this time, she met her future husband, Troy, on a blind date. They married in 1942.
She traveled from air base to air base while he was training in the air force until he was sent to England in World War II. During that period of time, she worked in Oklahoma City as a secretary. After the war she and Troy moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where they had their 3 children Cleive, Dan and Mary. In 1955 they moved to Tulsa where Lola completed her bachelors degree in education at the University of Tulsa. She began a 40-year career as an elementary school teacher until she retired in 1983. She was truly loved by her students and many kept in contact with her later in their lives.
Lola loved to travel and she and her husband traveled extensively throughout Europe and North America. The grandkids loved road trips with Grammy/Mimi and Grampy because there was no road side attraction or shop too weird or off the beaten path and they always came home with ever expanding collections of paperweights, ceramic poodles and other assorted treasures. She was quite the collector herself and had extensive collections of antiques and collectables.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy, son, Dan, and sister Zola. She is survived by her brother Leo of Hydro, Oklahoma, her daughter, Mary and her son Cleive and his wife Peggy, along with her grandchildren Danielle, Christopher, and Sarah and her great grandchildren Sebastian, Oliver and Alice as well as her grand doggie Enid Sue.
We would also like to thank the memory unit at Legends and Avow Hospice for the great care they gave her. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Yale Avenue Play and Learn preschool.
Memorial service will be 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Yale Avenue Christian Church, 3616 S. Yale, Tulsa, OK. Moore's Southlawn 918-663-2233 share memories at
