Obituary

Lonnie Dickey was born May 21, 1950 in Great Bend, KS, son of Orville and Pauline Dickey. He later moved to Casper, WY, where he gained a deep and abiding love of the mountains, snow, and the outdoors.

In 1979 he met the love of his life, Melanie (on a blind date on Friday the 13th, no less). They married soon afterward in 1980, starting a family together and having their only son Morgan in 1982. Lonnie worked to provide and care for the household in his role as systems analyst for Amoco, in the process also imparting an affinity and fascination with computers to his son.

He shared his love of skiing with the family, forming happy memories through adventures in the powdery snow and crisp air of Steamboat Springs, CO, and other destinations. The rugged landscape blanketed in white, sounds muffled but for the crunch of snow, and the clear mountain air stirred his soul, and this he also passed on to his son.

No record of Lonnie's life would be complete without mention of his love for cars, racing, and all things automotive. The thrill of a race, the satisfaction of restoring an old vehicle, and the reward of an engine thundering to life after long hours of work were very important to him. His most notable projects included a 1949 Seagrave fire engine pumper and a 1953 Chevy pickup truck. Two of his most prized vehicles were his 1983 Honda interceptor motorcycle (which he raced at Hallett raceway) and his 1995 Corvette (which he drove to Bowling Green, KY for the 50th anniversary of the Corvette).

By terrible misfortune, Lonnie developed Parkinson's and was diagnosed in 1994, taking early retirement not long afterward to spend time with his family. Despite his condition, he continued to work on cars while he was able and saw many more milestones in his son's life.

Lonnie passed peacefully in his sleep August 23, 2023. He is survived by his son Morgan Dickey, his beloved Melanie Dickey, stepbrother Gene Downard, cousins Mike Dickey, Jim Dickey, and Terry Thacker, aunt Rose Harper, and many other friends and family.
