After graduating from Minnihaha Academy in 1944, Ardell worked for the Office of War Information in New York and then traveled to Seattle to work for Boeing.

In 1945, Ardell married Kenneth Flattem. They lived in Minneapolis, Anaheim, and Ava Missouri. After the boys left home Ken and Ardell travelled extensively. They traveled the Louis and Clark Trail, where they periodically had "car trouble" and had to pull over to play golf. They were happily married for 56 years.

Ardell married Leroy Maack in August of 2001. They shared 15 wonderful years. They also traveled a lot. They spent two winters RVing in Arizona and Texas. They cruised Alaska.
