Lyn Jeanette (Siemens) Spencer was born on June 22, 1956, in Clinton, OK, to Walter and Margaret Siemens. She was the fifth of nine children. Lyn passed peacefully at her home in Broken Arrow, OK into her Savior's heavenly presence on June 3, 2025.
Lyn's early childhood included several moves before the family settled in Northwest Arkansas, where she graduated from Siloam Springs High School (Class of 1974). Her love of music and sports quickly became evident. She was drum major of the marching band, sang alto in choir, and her Powder Puff football team went undefeated for two consecutive years. Lyn went on to study at John Brown University where she received a bachelors in physical education (Class of 1979). While there, she participated in intramural sports and sang in the Cathedral Choir.
After a few years of being "old maid school teachers" with her sister, she met the love of her life, Ben Spencer. They were introduced at Eastwood Baptist Church in Tulsa, OK. Ben and Lyn were wed on May 29, 1983 and celebrated forty two years of marriage. They welcomed three boys together, Kyle, Craig, and Scott, and thus began her most beloved job of being a stay-at-home mom. During those years, she also provided childcare for a few families from church.
In 2001, Lyn returned to teaching P.E. at Legacy Christian School in Claremore, OK. For the final decade of her career, she taught Pre-K. Some highlights from her twenty-four years at Legacy included playing piano for morning chapel and loading and unloading children into cars with an exuberant smile. You could often find her sporting colorful visors or silly outfits on dress-up days. She was known as a joyful teacher, who loved and engaged each child personally. Lyn offered godly advice to other teachers on classroom management, and was also sought out for wisdom on marriage and parenting. A special gift that Lyn possessed was the ability to turn any Scripture into a song to help the children commit it to memory. Indeed, one could hardly have a conversation with her without a certain word or phrase causing her to burst into song!
For over forty years, she was a faithful member of Eastwood Baptist Church in Tulsa, OK, where she was committed to the children's, youth, and music ministries. She served in the nursery on Sunday mornings and at Vacation Bible School. Many parents forever remember her "Baby Bible Story Time." She faithfully worked in Awana and the Scripture memory tent at Faith Week summer camp, listening and encouraging students to commit God's Word to heart. Lyn sang with the church choir, worship team, and the women's ensemble, Rhapsody. Because she was often the first to get ready on a Sunday morning, she would sit at the piano and fill the house with music before the family left for church.
It is true that Lyn poured out Jesus' love to each child she taught over the years, but her seven grandchildren were her pride and joy. Whether it was pushing them on the swing for literal hours at a time, teaching songs and cute poems, supporting them at school events, or celebrating birthdays, Grammy Lyn made sure to pour the Love of Christ into them. One of her most admirable attributes was gift giving. She purposefully set aside money all year to save up for the perfect gift for each friend and family member.
Although she will forever be remembered for famous dishes such as "Lyn Dip," chocolate chip cookies, seasonal oyster crackers, and caramel brownies, it is her spiritual legacy that will have an eternal impact.
Lyn's life was full of service and sacrifice, but she knew it was not good works that made her right with God. Her faith was anchored in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Each morning, she could be found in a rocking chair in the corner of the piano room with her Bible open. When she met a stranger, they didn't stay that way long. Lyn got to know their life story and made sure they felt known and valued. She lived her life in response to God's great love, which motivated her to worship Him and serve others.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Margaret, and eldest brother, Don Siemens. She is survived by her husband Ben, sons Kyle (and wife Elizabeth), Craig (and wife Emily), Scott (and wife Ashlee), and bonus son Austin Brown (and wife Cassandra); seven grandchildren: Jayden, Gabrielle, Elijah, Haven, Josiah, Walton, and Jameson; seven siblings: Walta Hattaway, Rosanne Redditt, Dan Siemens, Doug Siemens, David Siemens, Jan Kimball, and Dwight Siemens.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Legacy Christian School and designated to the "Lyn Spencer Scholarship" fund.
