Madison Elizabeth Absher's Obituary

Madison Elizabeth Absher passed away on October 12, 2016 in Delray Beach, Florida. She was born in Tulsa, OK on May 24, 1992 to Brad Absher and Amy Murrell Absher.

Growing up, she attended Lee Elementary School in Tulsa and she sang in the children's choir at Boston Avenue Church. Madison started playing YMCA youth basketball at the early age of 4, at Thornton YMCA and she was a natural.

Her family was transferred to Houston, Texas when Madison was in the 4th grade but she always reminded everyone that Tulsa was home. She graduated from Lamar High School in 2010. Madison towered over the other kids and as she grew older and taller, her 6'7" height helped earn a 2009 Texas State Championship ring and a full ride scholarship to the University of Texas Pan American. Sports were a passion, but not for their competitive nature she loved the camaraderie, the teamwork and the fellowship of playing with friends. She loved the OU Sooners, and the OKC Thunder and the New Orleans Saints. Her spirit was unbridled; she cheered with passion and her coaches would often comment on her ability to rally the team to do their best.

Madison was very active in LGBT rights. She was an active participant in her community in Delray Beach and was a trusted mentor to many who struggled. Madison was the light in any room that she entered, the life of every party, a safe haven for friends to lean on. She gave the best hugs, her friends called her "Big Red" because of her beautiful long red hair...and the fact that she lived life "large." "Maddy" as her family called her was a kind and gentle spirit, generous to a fault. She loved deeply, listened intently to others and gave so much of herself. Maddy believed in LOVE, she did not see color, or status, she treated everyone with equal respect. She would give her last dollar to help someone down on their luck. Her charisma left a lasting impression on anyone she met. Madison would want us to love each other and lift each other up during this difficult time. Kindness and love is her lasting legacy.

She is survived by her parents, Brad and Amy Absher of Houston, Texas; her grandmother Betty Murrell; her uncle Mark Murrell and aunt Elizabeth Murrell of Tulsa, Oklahoma; her grandmother Vonda Absher of Vinita, Oklahoma and her partner Danny Goodman of Mamaroneck, New York. The family has asked that donations to the Tandy YMCA Madison Absher Youth Basketball Scholarship Program, 5002 S. Fulton Ave, Tulsa, OK 74135, be made in lieu of flowers.
